ACCOUNTABILITY FOR PET CARE
Griz's Law seeks to ensure that when a companion animal is injured while under the care of a business or individual entrusted with its safety, those responsible are held financially accountable for all necessary veterinary care and related expenses along the way, not the pet's family.

PETS ARE MORE THAN PROPERTY
Under current Florida law, companion animals are generally classified as personal property, also known as tangible personal property or chattel. Legally, this places a beloved family pet in the same property category as items such as a car, a television, a couch, or a piece of furniture, even though Florida also has separate animal welfare and anti-cruelty laws that recognize the need to protect animals from abuse and neglect.
Because pets are treated as property under the law, when a business or individual causes a serious injury to someone's companion animal, families are often forced to pay the entire cost of emergency treatment, surgeries, rehabilitation, medications, specialty care, travel, and follow-up appointments out of their own pocket while their pet is still fighting to recover. Only after treatment is complete can they pursue reimbursement through an insurance claim or legal action, if reimbursement is provided at all.

This places an enormous financial burden on families during one of the most devastating times imaginable. No family should have to choose between saving their pet's life and risking financial hardship because of someone else's negligence.

A dog is not simply a piece of property. A dog has a heartbeat, emotions, loyalty, and an unbreakable bond with the family they love. They comfort us when we're hurting, celebrate with us during life's happiest moments, and would do anything to protect the people they love. While a pet may legally be bought, sold, or adopted, the moment they become part of a family, they become so much more than property.

Griz's Law seeks to recognize that reality by ensuring the financial responsibility for injuries caused by negligence remains with the responsible party, NOT the family. We hope to create a future where Florida law better reflects the true value of the animals who are cherished members of our families.
What Griz's Law Will Do
Veterinary Coverage
We advocate for comprehensive coverage of emergency and ongoing medical expenses for companion animals, ensuring no pet owner bears the financial burden of life-saving care and continued treatment every step of the way.
Rehabilitation Care
Ensures injured animals receive rehabilitation, follow-up care, medications, mobility aids, and other treatment needed for recovery.
Incident Transparency
Requires businesses to document incidents, preserve evidence, and provide owners with prompt access to records and information.
Evidence Preservation
Protects the integrity of each case by requiring preservation of photos, videos, reports, and other relevant evidence.
Financial Accountability
Businesses responsible for an animal's injury must cover the cost of veterinary care as treatment occurs, ensuring families are never forced to pay out of pocket while their pet is recovering.
Compensation Rights
Provides families the right to recover financial losses resulting from an animal's injury caused at the hands of a business or individual, including travel expenses, lost wages, lodging, and other out-of-pocket costs.
